Week 7: Internal Vows and the Power of Darkness
Scripture Reading
Matthew 5:33-37
Colossians 1:13-17
Reflection
Matthew 5:33-37
"Again, you have heard that it was said to those of old, ‘You shall not swear falsely, but shall perform your oaths to the Lord.’ But I say to you, do not swear at all: neither by heaven, for it is God’s throne; nor by the earth, for it is His footstool; nor by Jerusalem, for it is the city of the great King. Nor shall you swear by your head, because you cannot make one hair white or black. But let your ‘Yes’ be ‘Yes,’ and your ‘No,’ ‘No.’ For whatever is more than these is from the evil one."
Reflection Questions:
Why does Jesus emphasize not swearing oaths?
How does letting your "Yes" be "Yes" and your "No" be "No" reflect integrity in your faith?
Colossians 1:13-17
"He has delivered us from the power of darkness and conveyed us into the kingdom of the Son of His love, in whom we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of sins. He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation. For by Him all things were created that are in heaven and that are on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or principalities or powers. All things were created through Him and for Him. And He is before all things, and in Him all things consist."
Reflection Questions:
What does it mean to be delivered from the power of darkness?
How does understanding Jesus' role in creation deepen your trust in Him?
Teaching Summary
Last week, we discussed the nature of vows—internal promises we make to God or ourselves, often without fully considering our capacity to fulfill them. These vows can stem from a desire to show commitment but may also reveal an underlying spirit of unbelief.
This week, we focus on understanding the power of darkness. Colossians 1:13 emphasizes that Jesus has delivered us from the power of darkness, not from darkness itself. This suggests that while darkness remains, its power over us is broken through Christ. The internal covenants we make can become burdensome if they are not aligned with our true capabilities and God's grace.
The goal is to live out of the Spirit, recognizing our human limitations and depending wholly on God's grace. By understanding our dependency on God, we can live free from the power of darkness and the guilt of unfulfilled vows.
Action Points
Acknowledge and Reflect:
Spend five minutes in prayer, acknowledging any internal vows you've made. Reflect on whether you have the capacity to fulfill them or if they were made out of a desire to impress rather than out of genuine commitment.
Prayer Example: "Lord, I acknowledge the vows I have made to You and others. Help me to see clearly whether I have the capacity to fulfill them and give me the grace to live honestly before You."
Scripture Meditation:
Meditate on Colossians 1:13-17. Write down any insights or feelings that arise as you reflect on being delivered from the power of darkness and conveyed into the kingdom of Jesus.
Meditation Focus: "He has delivered us from the power of darkness."
Simplify Commitments:
Review your current commitments. Simplify them by focusing on what you can realistically achieve with God's help. Write down one or two commitments that you can honor and bring before God regularly.
Example: "I will spend 10 minutes each morning in prayer and Bible reading, trusting God to guide my steps each day."
Living in Grace:
Practice relying on God's grace in your daily activities. When you face challenges, remind yourself that you are not under the power of darkness but living in the light of God's kingdom.
Daily Reminder: "By God's grace, I am delivered from the power of darkness and live in the kingdom of His Son."
Closing Prayer
"Heavenly Father, thank You for delivering me from the power of darkness and bringing me into the kingdom of Your Son. Help me to live out of Your Spirit, acknowledging my limitations and depending on Your grace. Let my yes be yes and my no be no, reflecting integrity and trust in You. In Jesus' name, Amen."
Use this workbook daily or weekly to reflect on your journey with God. May it help you lay a secure foundation in your faith and grow closer to Him each day.
